The occasional thoughts of a peripatetic mind from 'the Athens of the South' (Adelaide, South Australia). The blog's title derives from the Australian expression 'beyond the black stump', meaning that it's beyond 'civilisation'. The tree stump is also a traditional 'soapbox' from which orators of both good and evil intent have delivered their messages.

Before the Devil knows you're dead
Saw this movie yesterday. Slightly overlong, as is the modern trend (bizarrely in a world of diminishing attention spans), but a stunning performance from that old stager Albert Finney who manages to show that other excellent performer Philip Seymour Hoffman that he still has a way to go. Well worth seeing but be warned of monents of extreme violence.
it's great - I agree. Watched in on a plane from Hong Kong, and remembered how much I hate watching movies on planes...or is it being on planes that I hate?
ReplyDeleteFinney is wonderful - one of my top theatre experiences was watching him in London playing Hamlet, when i was a student about 450 years ago.
